7 Proven Strategies for UCAT Verbal Reasoning

Verbal Reasoning has 44 questions and is one of the most time-pressured subtests โ€” roughly 30 seconds per question. These 7 habits make the biggest difference.

  1. Read the question before the passage. Know what you are looking for.
  2. Never use outside knowledge. Every answer must come from the passage alone.
  3. True / False / Can't Tell: if the passage does not confirm or contradict the statement, it is Can't Tell.
  4. Scan for keywords from the question, then read that part closely.
  5. Watch the qualifiers: "always", "never", "all", "only" make statements absolute.
  6. Flag and move on if you pass about 30 seconds.
  7. Practise with a timer so the pace feels normal on test day.
